Batanes Island is the northern-most island in the Philippines archipelago. It is brilliantly green, primarily because it is constantly whipped by high winds and sudden rain storms.
The island boasts rocky beaches, craggy cliffs and.....
......sometimes, palm trees.
It is also the birthplace of a dear friend, Pacita Abad (above), who was one of the great modern artists of the Philippines. Her Foundation is located at Tukon along with much of her art work.
I went to Batanes on the spur of the moment. I joined a photo safari with a small group whom I had never met before, led by a well-known Manila photographer. We studied seascapes, landscapes, churches, lighthouses, portraiture and jumpology! Here are some of the results.
Fisherman in the ocean
Rugged hills behind the cliffs where sudden gusts of wind can knock you over
Interior of the small church at Tukon--murals by a 20-year old local artist
A working lighthouse and gardens
Our fearless leader--Mandy Navasero--who taught us so much about photography in three days
