Shwedagon Pagoda, Rangoon

The Shwe Dagon Pagoda is reputedly made up of over 20,000 golden bars

A phalanx of sweepers keep the pagoda's marble floor clean in return for good karma

The pagoda is lined with small temples, altars and holy shrines where people make offerings
and say prayers

Statues of Buddha are draped in gorgeous silks

Even the Buddhist monks have to check Twitter!

These “bricks” look like they should be locked up in Fort Knox

Prayers are offered at many shrines and altars

“Shwe" means gold in Burmese.  “Dagon" is the historic district in
which the pagoda is located

Buddhist nuns chanting in a separate shrine

The pagoda, temples and spires are almost overwhelming.  Rudyard Kipling said that it was a “beautiful winking wonder that blazed in the sun"
